Saindak Metals Limited, Pakistan's largest Chinese-operated copper and gold mine, has warned it may cease operations within a month. The company cited a deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan, which has severely affected the transportation of essential project cargo, making uninterrupted operations unsustainable.
The Saindak Copper-Gold Project, Pakistan's first large-scale mining venture, is a significant contributor to the nation's export revenue. Its output accounted for the majority of Pakistan's roughly $750 million in copper products last year, alongside gold production. Its potential closure represents a significant blow to Pakistan's ambitions for natural resource extraction and export earnings.
A cessation of operations at Saindak could reduce Pakistan's domestic gold supply and negatively impact the country's export revenue, potentially adding pressure on the Pakistani Rupee against the US Dollar.
