ECC Approves 1M-Tonne Wheat Import Amid Price Surge
Pakistan's Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has urgently approved the import of one million tonnes of wheat, responding to a significant price surge from Rs125 to over Rs150 per kg within a week and market shortages. A steering committee has been formed to expedite the opening of Letters of Credit for these imports. This move aims to stabilize domestic food prices but will likely increase the country's import bill, potentially adding pressure on the USD/PKR exchange rate and influencing local gold prices.

پاکستان کی اقتصادی رابطہ کمیٹی (ای سی سی) نے گندم کی بڑھتی ہوئی قیمتوں اور مارکیٹ میں قلت کے پیش نظر فوری طور پر 10 لاکھ ٹن گندم درآمد کرنے کی منظوری دے دی ہے۔ ایک ہفتے میں گندم کی قیمت 125 روپے سے بڑھ کر 150 روپے فی کلو سے تجاوز کر گئی تھی۔ درآمدی ایل سیز کھولنے کے لیے ایک اسٹیئرنگ کمیٹی بھی تشکیل دی گئی ہے۔ اس اقدام کا مقصد مقامی خوراک کی قیمتوں کو مستحکم کرنا ہے لیکن اس سے ملک کا درآمدی بل بڑھ سکتا ہے، جس سے ممکنہ طور پر امریکی ڈالر/پاکستانی روپے کی شرح تبادلہ پر دباؤ پڑے گا اور مقامی سونے کی قیمتیں متاثر ہوں گی۔
