World Food Prices Hit 3-Year High Amid War, Weather; Crude Oil Rises
The UN’s FAO Food Price Index averaged 131.1 points in July, the highest since January 2023, driven by a 3.4% rise in cereal prices and a 5.8% jump in wheat due to Black Sea disruptions and heat damage. Vegetable oil prices rose 2% to a June 2022 high, supported by higher crude oil prices amid escalation in the Iran war, while sugar climbed 5.6% on weather concerns. This surge in global commodity and crude oil prices could fuel imported inflation in Pakistan, potentially weakening the PKR and increasing demand for gold as a hedge against currency depreciation and economic uncertainty.
