Gulf Crisis Worsens, Energy Disruption Hits Pakistan & Bangladesh
The ongoing Gulf crisis, stemming from US/Israel attacks on Iran and Saudi-Houthi fighting, has disrupted oil and gas exports via the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea. This has driven Asian spot LNG prices towards $30 per million BTUs, causing blackouts and factory shutdowns in Bangladesh and significant fuel price hikes in Pakistan. Pakistan has introduced a fuel subsidy scheme, but it faces implementation challenges amid rising petrol and diesel costs. Continued energy instability could further pressure the Pakistani Rupee and increase local demand for gold as a hedge against inflation.
