Experts Urge Faster Cotton Import Approvals to Boost Pakistan's Economy

Pakistan's cotton industry needs urgent regulatory reform to cut the seven-year approval process for imported varieties to 12-24 months, experts stated. Lengthy procedures delay access to high-yielding germplasm, hindering the sector which is crucial for textiles and edible oil. Proposed changes include simultaneous trials and faster biosecurity screening, aiming to introduce new varieties by 2028. Such reforms, if implemented, could strengthen Pakistan's export-oriented textile sector, potentially supporting the Pakistani Rupee in the long term.
