Pakistan's Digital Vulnerabilities Cost 2.5% of GDP Annually in Cyber Fraud
An IMF and World Bank report highlights Pakistan's significant digital vulnerabilities, with cyber-enabled financial fraud costing an estimated 2.5% of GDP, the highest in Asia. The report blames systemic failures in security, regulation, and data protection, citing cases of duplicate SIM fraud and compromised banking data. This substantial economic drain underscores inadequate investment in cybersecurity and a legislative vacuum, exposing citizens and businesses to pervasive threats. Such persistent economic losses and erosion of financial system integrity could negatively impact investor confidence in Pakistan, potentially influencing the stability of the Pakistani Rupee and demand for safe-haven assets like gold.
