💡 International Gold Rate FAQ

What is the international gold rate (XAU/USD)?

XAU/USD is the global spot price of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure gold in US dollars. It is the benchmark the whole world — including Pakistan's sarafa markets — prices gold from. The live figure at the top of this page updates in real time while the international market is open.

When is the international gold market open?

The international spot market trades almost around the clock from Sunday evening (US time — early Monday in Pakistan) to Friday's New York close (early Saturday morning PKT), with only short daily breaks. It is closed on Saturday. This differs from the local sarafa market, which keeps its own bazaar days and hours — so the intl price can move while the local market is closed, and the sarafa rate catches up when it reopens.

How do I convert the ounce price to grams and tolas?

Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 to get the price per gram, then multiply by 11.664 for the price per tola (1 tola = 11.664 g). To get Pakistani Rupees, multiply the dollar figure by the live USD/PKR open-market rate. The table on this page does all of this automatically from live data.

Why is the local sarafa rate different from the converted international rate?

The converted figure is a pure mathematical equivalent. The actual sarafa per-tola rate also reflects import costs and duties, local demand and supply, dealer margins and the physical premium on bars — so it normally sits somewhat above the converted international price. The comparison card on this page shows today's difference live.

What moves the international gold price?

Mainly the US dollar and interest rates: Federal Reserve decisions, inflation data (CPI), jobs reports and the dollar index (DXY). Geopolitical tension and central-bank gold buying also push it. PakGold's Economic Calendar lists these events in Pakistan time and flags the ones with gold impact.
