PBC Chairman Urges Rapid SOE Privatization, Tax Reform for Economic Stability

Newly appointed PBC Chairman Ziad Bashir has urged the government to privatize all loss-making State-Owned Entities (SOEs) within 12 months, citing billions in yearly losses and the success of PIA's privatization. He also stressed the need for rapid export growth, a complete overhaul of the "broken" tax system to broaden the tax base, and addressing high energy costs. Bashir emphasized engaging with the IMF on energy pricing and curbing smuggling to boost industrial competitiveness. These aggressive economic reforms, if pursued, could improve Pakistan's fiscal health and strengthen the Rupee, potentially influencing local gold and currency rates.
