Oil Nears $100 as Hormuz Attacks Intensify Amid Stalled US-Iran Talks
Crude oil prices are surging, with Brent heading towards a 5% weekly gain and approaching $100 per barrel, driven by escalating attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and the continued deadlock in US-Iran negotiations. Tehran has reportedly ratcheted up strikes on ships, while the White House has reinforced its blockade of Iranian crude. This upward momentum persists despite an unusually high 17-million-barrel build in US crude inventories, which only partially mitigated the overall price pressure. For Pakistan, rising global oil prices could worsen imported inflation and pressure the USD/PKR exchange rate, potentially boosting local gold demand as a hedge.
