AUD/NZD Under Pressure as European Debt Jitters Boost US Dollar
The Australian and New Zealand dollars are on the defensive as jitters in European debt markets, particularly French deficits, have widened bond spreads and benefited the super-liquid greenback. The Aussie dollar fell to $0.6965, while the kiwi dollar hovered at $0.5605, both losing ground overnight. This risk-off sentiment has pushed up global bond yields, with Australian 10-year yields reaching a 15-year high, yet the premium for Aussie debt has shrunk.
