Lawmakers, Govt Clash Over Discos Privatisation Amid $30bn Losses
Pakistan's proposed privatisation of power distribution companies (Discos) faces controversy as a Senate panel insists on Council of Common Interests (CCI) approval, while the government claims prior consent is valid. Adviser Muhammad Ali stated Discos caused over $30 billion in losses in 15 years, stressing privatisation is vital to reduce the burden on the national exchequer. The panel also questioned Rs2.6 trillion in federal spending on devolved subjects. Delays or successful reforms could impact Pakistan's fiscal health, influencing USD/PKR stability and local gold rates.
