India's RBI Spends Half of $140B FX Haul Defending Rupee Amid Dollar Strength
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has utilized roughly half of the $140 billion mobilised earlier this year, spending an estimated $75-80 billion to support the local currency through spot dollar sales and swaps. This intervention comes amidst pressure on the rupee from elevated oil prices, rising US Treasury yields, and persistent foreign equity outflows. The RBI's foreign exchange reserves have fallen significantly, with analysts noting a sharp drop in usable reserves. Continued dollar strength, as evidenced by this intervention, could exert further pressure on international gold prices and potentially influence the USD/PKR exchange rate in Pakistan.
