Pakistan's Fiscal Strain in FY27 Q1: Rising Interest Payments & Spending
The Ministry of Finance reported a narrowed fiscal surplus to 0.8% of GDP and a primary surplus decline in FY27's first quarter. Interest payments rose 37%, and development expenditure surged 69.5%, outpacing revenue growth. The current account deficit also increased to $874 million. However, a $3 billion Eurobond issue and increased FDI led to a $3.1 billion balance of payments surplus and stronger SBP reserves at $21.5 billion by Oct 16, with the SBP's 12% policy rate hike supported to curb inflation. This mixed economic outlook suggests potential volatility for USD/PKR, with fiscal pressures possibly weighing on the rupee while improved external financing offers some support, influencing local gold demand.
