Pakistan Wastes Rs3.5 Trillion Yearly on Energy Imports Amid Mismanagement

Friday, 06 November 2026 · 08:47 AM PKT · PakGold News Desk · 👁 15

A LUMS Energy Institute report reveals Pakistan wastes Rs3.5 trillion annually on energy imports, over three times the federal development budget, due to mismanagement, delayed building codes, and neglected local manufacturing. Despite 36,000MW generation capacity, base load hasn't grown since 2015, yet the country imports $2.7 billion in LNG for winter heating. Experts highlight potential savings of Rs442.6 billion by improving energy efficiency in just 25% of residential buildings and Rs1.1 trillion through power sector indigenization. This significant foreign exchange drain could further pressure the PKR, potentially making gold a more attractive hedge for local investors.
