US tightens Iran sanctions, targets insurers and tankers amid Strait of Hormuz tensions
The United States has issued a new round of Iran-related sanctions, designating 10 entities and eight tankers, including firms integral to an alleged Iranian scheme to extract revenue from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Six of the targeted entities are based in China. This move follows increased US-Iran tensions and military actions in the Middle East, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stating the US will not allow Iran to hold global commerce hostage. Since early 2026, over 100 vessels linked to Iran's shadow fleet have been sanctioned. This escalation could potentially increase crude oil prices due to supply concerns in the region, which might push international gold prices higher and put pressure on Pakistan's import bill and USD/PKR rate.
