Indian Monsoon Deficit Threatens Crops, Sparks Regional Inflation Fears
India faces a significant monsoon rainfall deficit, with western, central, and southern regions expecting below-average rains, jeopardizing newly planted cotton, soybean, corn, and pulse crops. The country has received 12% less rainfall than average this season, with some states seeing deficits up to 34%, and a strengthening El Nino is expected to worsen conditions. This agricultural distress could lead to higher food prices in the region, potentially contributing to inflation in Pakistan and exerting pressure on the PKR, which may increase demand for gold as a hedge.
