Gold Mine Collapse Kills 100 in Central Africa

A tragic landslide at an illegal gold mine near the border with Cameroon in the Central African Republic has resulted in the deaths of at least 100 artisanal miners. The accident occurred at the Zamboye mining site, about 50 kilometres from Baboua, with search and rescue operations continuing. Local sources reported numerous injuries, and a judicial inquiry has been opened into the incident, which is believed to be caused by the collapse of underground tunnels. While a tragic event, such localized incidents at artisanal mines are unlikely to have a significant impact on international gold prices or the USD/PKR rate.
