Electricity Users Face Rs25bn Fuel Cost Hike; Nepra Reviews Industrial Tariff

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is reviewing the incremental tariff package for industry as consumers are set to bear an extra Rs25 billion in fuel costs in their October electricity bills. This hike, amounting to Rs1.73 per unit in August, is attributed to expensive imported RLNG and coal, alongside lower-than-estimated generation from cheaper hydropower and nuclear facilities. Industrial representatives have criticized the existing support package, while the government is discussing the petroleum levy with the IMF. This significant increase in utility costs will fuel inflation and could exert further pressure on the Pakistani Rupee, potentially supporting local gold prices.
