Govt: World Bank Poverty Figures Reflect Regional Reclassification
The government clarified that the World Bank's finding of Pakistan accounting for nearly half of the extreme poor in the newly defined MENAAP region is due to an administrative reclassification, not a change in Pakistan's economic status. Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad noted the inclusion of Pakistan, with its large population, naturally alters regional aggregates. The World Bank reported Pakistan's poverty rate rose 6.4 percentage points between 2018-19 and 2024-25, citing shocks like floods, high inflation, currency depreciation, and economic adjustments. This ongoing economic pressure could subtly influence long-term sentiment towards the Pakistani Rupee and local gold demand.
