Govt Clarifies World Bank Poverty Figures Amid Regional Reclassification

Thursday, 08 October 2026 · 02:31 PM PKT · PakGold News Desk · 👁 21

The government stated that the World Bank's inclusion of Pakistan in the newly defined MENAAP region, where it accounts for nearly half the extreme poor, is an administrative reclassification. Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad emphasized this does not alter Pakistan's geographical or income identity. The World Bank noted Pakistan's poverty rate rose 6.4 percentage points between 2018-19 and 2024-25, driven by shocks like floods, high inflation, and currency depreciation. This ongoing economic assessment highlights persistent challenges that could maintain pressure on the Pakistani Rupee.
