Impact on Gold PHMA Criticizes SBP Policy Rate Hike to 12%, Warns of Export Impact
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 12%, drawing strong criticism from the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA). PHMA warned that higher borrowing costs will erode the competitiveness of Pakistan's export industries, which already face high production costs and intense regional competition. They highlighted Pakistan's policy rate being significantly higher than competitors like Bangladesh (9.5%), Sri Lanka (8.75%), and India (5.5%). This SBP decision could put upward pressure on local borrowing costs, potentially strengthening the PKR in the short term, which might temper local gold price gains.
